Moraea MM 16-50

Seed parent: MM 12-125a (M. aristata x (atropunctata x neopavonia) X neopavonia)
Pollen parent: Unknown

Sometimes a bulb will produce an unlabeled seed pod, even though I grow them in screenhouses that keep pollinators out. I never know if these "accidental" seeds are hybrids that I forgot to label, self-pollinated, or the result of a pollinating insect that snuck into the screenhouse.

In this case the offspring is pretty bland, so I'm in no hurry to know the parent.

Moraea MM 16-30

Seed parent: MM 12-125a (M. aristata X (atropunctata x neopavonia))
Pollen parent: MM 12-122b

The seed parent is one of my favorite hybrids, a white and orange flower that reminds me of a white pumpkin, while the pollen parent is a nice orange flower blushed with purple. The combination of them, unfortunately, has been very bland so far.

Moraea MM 16-26

Seed parent: MM 11-28 (M. aristata X gigandra)
Pollen parent: Moraea neopavonia 'Summerfield'

The seed parent is a purple flower with some darker rays in the middle of the tepal. I crossed it with an orange species, and you can see that the darker blush transferred into this flower.

Moraea MM 16-03

Seed parent: Moraea gigandra
Pollen parent: Morara neopavonia 'Summerfield' form

When you cross these two species, you sometimes get mauvey-colored flowers that look a bit reddish. In this case, though, they are creamy orange, with nice blue eyes in a couple of cases.

MM 16-03b

Oops, I also labeled this one 16-03b:

MM 16-03c

MM 16-03d

The eye of this one is pure black, so I didn't bother assigning it a letter.

Moraea MM 16-02

Seed parent: MM 12-136 ((M. atropunctata x neopavonia) x villosa ) X neopavonia
Pollen parent: Unknown

MM 16-02a

The colors in this one are very rich when you catch a freshly opened flower on a sunny day:

This one doesn't have a letter assigned to it

Moraea MM 15-120

Seed parent: Moraea atropunctata
Pollen parent: Moraea neopavonia 'Summerfield'

I haven't assigned this one a letter yet. The parents are creamy flower with very dark spots on it. and a very bright orange one. I seem to have ended up with the worst of both worlds: a pale pastel flower with no spots on it. There are some things I really do like about this plant, though. There's a nice symmetrical look to its central speckles, I like that the inner tepals (the small petals) are darker orange than the outer tepals, and the color contrast between the upper and lower surfaces of the tepals is very interesting.

I hope that with additional breeding, this cross will lead to some fascinating flowers. The good news is that it's a vigorous plant and looks to be very fertile.

MM 15-120a

This is an older flower (the edges of the tepals roll as they age). This picture shows off the very nice orange color on the backs of the tepals.

This is a newly-opened flower.

Moraea MM 15-117

Seed parent: Moraea 'Zoe' offspring
Pollen parent: MM 11-72a (M. tulbaghensis X villosa)

MM 15-117a. I crossed a very bright orange hybrid with a brightly speckled plant, and I got something with...pastels. Not what I expected, but I do like the brightness of the eyes.
