Gladiolus MM 03-03

Seed parent: Gladiolus cardinalis
Pollen parent: Gladiolus tristis

Gladiolus cardinalis is a beautiful red flower with white markings. Unfortunately, I lost the species years ago, but still have this hybrid. I was hoping for a flower that has the color of G. cardinalis but the size of G. tristis. I didn't get it.

  1. Did you do both the forward and the reziprocal crossing, and if so, what were the results; also, did you backcross any of these primary hybrids onto G. cardinalis ? I am planning to hybridize with that species, would be of interest to know how its colour & markings are inherited. Cheers, Florian

  2. Hi, Florian. I'm really sorry I didn't reply to your earlier. Unfortunately, that was the only hybrid I made with G. cardinalis, and I have not reacquired the species since then. Sorry I can't help, and I would be very interested to hear how your hybrids turn out. --Mike
